In 1972 Jane Fonda embarked on a controversial trip to North Vietnam which gave birth to the moniker "Hanoi Jane." The actress and activist visited American prisoners of war (POWs) and met with North Vietnamese officials.

Fonda’s trip was met with widespread criticism in the United States. She was accused of treason and of being a sympathizer with the enemy. Fonda’s actions during the Vietnam War continue to be a source of debate today.
