**Japan to Release Treated Radioactive Water from Fukushima Nuclear Plant** TOKYO, Japan - On October 4, 2022, Japan submitted a report to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) outlining the discharge record and seawater monitoring results at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The Fukushima accident occurred in 2011 after a massive earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown at the plant. Since then, radioactive water has been accumulating on-site and must be treated before being released into the Pacific Ocean. The release of treated radioactive water is scheduled to begin in spring 2023. The water will be diluted and processed through a filtration system to remove most of the radioactive isotopes. However, some environmental groups and local residents have expressed concerns about the potential impact on marine life and human health. Japan has maintained that the water will meet international safety standards and that the release is necessary to decommission the plant. The IAEA has been monitoring the situation and will continue to provide technical assistance and support to Japan as the release proceeds.
